Kriiip, kriiiip, kriiiiiiip!

In South Africa, access to educational materials in accessible formats is limited. In this project, Steph Simpson and I explored ways in which we could create engaging and contextually relevant learning experiences for South African children.

Focusing on the unique characteristics of Afrikaans, a language rich in words that echo their meaning, we investigated how these “sound-sense” connections can be translated into tactile formats. By collaborating closely with visually impaired readers and drawing on our expertise in narrative illustration and tactile book design, we developed this multi-sensory, descriptive and interactive book about the Crowned Lapwing, a South African bird easily recognisable by its typical kriiip, kriiiip, kriiiiiiip call.

In 2024, Kriiip, kriiiip, kriiiiiiip! won a silver Pendoring in the tactical use of print category.
